A Beetle basked its Wings – Bill´s inspiration

Using nature as the source of inspiration for new technology is known as Biomimicry,

and a number of key biomimicry ideas has inspired Bill and the team.

In the deserts of Namibia, there is a small beetle called the Namibian Fog Basking Beetle. By catching fog droplets from the salt air blowing in from the ocean, this small beetle has

demonstrated a unique surviving talent in one of the harshest climates in the world.

The Namibian fog-basking beetle was important in developing the design of the

saltwater-cooled greenhouse, one of three core components of the Sahara Forest

Project: saltwater-cooled greenhouses, concentrated solar power (CSP), and desert

re-vegetation. Overall, the design is founded on the premise that we must find a more holistic approach to successfully tackle challenges related to energy, food, and water security.
